Follow Sportsmail's coverage of the Barclays Premier League as West
Brom host Fulham at the Hawthorns to kick off 2013 in the Premier
League.
The Baggies are aiming to continue their push for a European spot against a Cottagers side just
four points off the bottom three.
West Bromwich 1 Fulham 2 (FT)
West Brom: Foster, Jones, Tamas, McAuley, Ridgewell, Brunt (Thorne 84), Mulumbu,
Gera (Long 65), Morrison, Fortune (Odemwingie 65), Lukaku
Substitutes: Myhill, Rosenberg, Jara Reyes, Dawson
Goal: Lukaku 48
Fulham: Stockdale, Riether, Hughes, Hangeland, Briggs, Dejagah, Sidwell, Karagounis
(Rodallega 75), Kacaniklic, Ruiz, Berbatov (Senderos 90)
Substitutes: Etheridge, Baird, Kasami, Richardson, Frei
Goal: Berbatov 39, Kacaniklic 57
Referee: Mike Dean (Wirral)
Full time: West Brom 1 Fulham 2
Fulham's first away win for three months takes them 12th in the table.
For me, it was very well deserved too.
Martin Jol sent them out with a solid, counter-attacking game plan and strikes from the outstanding Dimitar Berbatov and Alex Kacaniklic were enough to counter Romelu Lukaku's equaliser.
A very happy New Year for Fulham fans.
The match report can be read here
You can keep track of all the 3pm Premier League kick-offs with
Dan Ripley here
94min It doesn't quite work out after a spot of pinball and Stockdale leaps on it with grateful
hands.
93min One last assault for West Brom...
But first, man of the match Berbatov is replaced by Senderos
91min Great play from Jones, who waltzes past
two Fulham defenders before his sharp cross is cleared
by Hangeland
90min Three minutes of stoppage time.
Will there be a late twist?
88min Hearts-in-mouth moment for Fulham as
Hangeland dithers in his own box and then Lukaku falls over him.
Nothing doing despite the appeals.
86min Poor from Shane Long who runs and runs towards the byline under
no discernible pressure, only to take the ball out of play
84min Final sub for West Brom as young George Thorne replaces Chris Brunt
'In the eighth minute there was 60 seconds applause for Chelsea's eight goals against Villa'
11min First chance of the match - the Iranian Dejagah breaks
down the right and Sidwell collects before firing a shot high, wide and
pretty darn ugly.
9min Martin Jol has set Fulham up to be disciplined and organised, and to attack on the counter.
Giorgios Karagounis swings in the game's first corner dangerously and it
just evades Aaron Hughes.
6min It's been a very low key start to the match with no chances so far.
Commentators saying the Fulham players went without
a great deal of sleep in their hotel as New Year's celebrations went on around them.
Daylight robbery: Liam Ridgewell tries to steal the ball from Fulham's Ashkan Dejagah
Early skirmish: Romelu Lukaku (right) shields the ball from Brede Hangeland in the opening
minutes
4min Fulham, who are confidently stroking the ball around in the early
stages, wearing their orange change colours today and kicking
into the bright sunshine in the first half.
3min Chris Brunt collects the dubious honour of 2013's first foul
and is given a stern talking to by Mike Dean.
1min Groans from the travelling Fulham fans after Kacaniklic thought he'd
won an early corner.
But it's actually a goal kick, which Foster shanks out of play.
FOOTBALL IN 2013 HAS STARTED!
12.44pm Romelu Lukaku looking purposeful in the centre circle as the sides line-up for kick-off.
Can he add to his six league goals so far this season today?
12.43pm The sides walk out into the winter sunshine at The Hawthorns to the beat of Sash's
Encore une Fois and line-up for the traditional handshake show of goodwill.
12.41pm The two teams are in the tunnel, with kick-off moments away
12.34pm One not so good omen for the home side is that when they have Claudio Yacob
in the team, they win 57 per cent of the time compared to
33 per cent without him.
12.32pm I should clarify that in order for West Brom to go fourth this afternoon, they need to win 8-0...
12.27pm For the sake of completeness, here are this afternoon's substitutes:
West Brom: Myhill, Rosenberg, Long, Thorne, Jara Reyes,
Odemwingie, Dawson
Fulham: Etheridge, Senderos, Baird, Kasami, Richardson, Rodallega, Frei
The referee is Mike Dean
Here's a marvellous picture of Fulham boss Martin Jol
in the colours of West Brom in 1983...
12.25pm It won't have escaped your attention that the January
transfer window opens today and the breeze of new signings is beginning to
waft through.
For Fulham, a deal to bring Wolfsburg defender Alexander Madlung (great name) is
growing ever closer.
12.15pm A bit of build-up to pass the time before kick-off and West Brom
goalkeeper Ben Foster has urged his teammates to continue the excellent
form from the first half of the campaign as they push for a European place.
12.12pm Here's a very clever way of celebrating the New Year in the Baggies changing room:
Happy New Year!
The shirts of Romelu Lukaku and Boaz Myhill spell out
2013 in the West Brom dressing room
12.06pm Kick-off at The Hawthorns is at 12.45pm but stay with us as we build towards kick-off.
West Brom could move back into the Champions League places with a win today, albeit temporarily.
They're seventh at the moment after taking six points from nine over the
Christmas period with that 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford last time out the only
blot.
They will also be encouraged by their good home record against Fulham
- although they've won only three of their last 13 Premier League encounters with the Cottagers, all three have come at home.
Fulham, down in 14th, are desperate for a New Year pick-me-up after
taking just a point over Christmas.
12.03pm We start, as ever, with the breaking team news from the
Midlands:
Steve Clarke has rung in the changes with the New Year, making five changes from
the side that lost 2-0 to Manchester United on Boxing Day.
Youssouf Mulumbu, Zoltan Gera, Marc-Antoine Fortune, James
Morrison and Romelu Lukaku are restored to the side.
Martin Jol - who used to play for West Brom of course - makes one change from the team beaten 2-1 at home by Swansea City as Alexander Kacaniklic is preferred
to Kerim Frei.
West Brom: Foster; Jones, McAuley, Tamas, Ridgewell;
Brunt, Mulumbu; Fortune, Morrison, Gera; Lukaku
Fulham: Stockdale; Riether, Hughes, Hangeland, Briggs; Dejagah, Sidwell, Karagounis, Kacaniklic; Ruiz; Berbatov
12pm So, how are we all feeling?
A little groggy no doubt after a New Year's night of hedonism.
I'm bright and breezy but I sympathise with you and I have the perfect cure to help - It's
the first sporting event of 2013 and it's the Premier League clash between West Bromwich
Albion and Fulham at The Hawthorns.
I very much doubt if sport can reach the heights of drama and entertainment seen in 2012, but it has to start somewhere and so here we go again...Happy New Year!
